Shagbark Hickory


Etymology - The name is derived from the Greek karya, meaning walnut tree (the form karyon was applied to all fruits of similar form)

Habitat - North America

Description - A tree that can reach 80-100 ft tall. The trunk is straight, branches erect and irregular, the crown narrow. The bark is light gray in color and when the tree reaches full maturity (after 30 years) it will begin to peel off in curly shaggy strips.

Propagation: seed

Conditions for growth: hardy, and likes loam soils.
